It is marketed as a book to release the power of your brain, to help you think smarter, be more focused, more creative. But it actually does more than that. It also shows you how you can be happier. Thats a trick I learnt a couple of years ago. Its simply about the way you recall your key memories. The more you tell yourself something was fun – and the more you like things, the more it becomes true. But I digress…Essentially, this book has tips to help you get more out of life, through work, home, wherever. Its a book with ideas on how to be more effective, come up with more ideas, and enjoy your life. With every book like this, the style appeals to some and not others. I really like this one. Its not a difficult read – but treats you as an adult. You don’t have to read in a linear way – you can dip in and out, skip parts, there are even two pages at the back where you are encouraged to write notes. The book isn’t about treating problems, but about has plenty of ideas to try. Not all of them will suit everyone – I’m still not sure I could stand in front of a mirror and give myself a confidence boosting speech…. but there are other ideas I know I already do. I always write up what I’ve done on Facebook in a positive way – and this means that when I look back at those days, my positive recollection is boosted over anything that might have not gone so well.I would recommend this. Its a really interesting book, which doesn’t preach, but if you only take one of the 45 tips, then it would be worth reading.5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great example of a book of its kindBy Lark TOP 1000 REVIEWER on 2 April 2016This is a great book for anyone interested in the whole life hacking, life logging or improved/increased awareness of thought processes and thinking, if you’ve read any of the books on the expanded and expanding knowledge base on psychology/mind/thinking such as David McRaney’s books You Can Beat Your Brain or You Are Not As Smart As You Think will enjoy this book. The format is good, lending itself to easy reading, its also good for a second read or reference on any especially interesting aspect of the subject matter and its clearly written not just as a presentation of current findings and research but with a view to the reader applying it all in practice. There is a good list of references and credits for illustrations, about the author and acknowledgements, two spare pages for notes but no index. The contents are good and broken into sections, sections have subsections, there is good use of bullet points, subheadings and quotations to break up the text, which is well spaced besides, there are quotations from the text in larger lettering interspaced throughout the text (which I know is a bug bear for some people and puts them off reading books of this kind as it proves a kind of distraction, I dont mind it or think it spoils the presentation in any way). Illustrations are line drawings, I think there is one photo of a cat dressed as a rabbit and there are charts supporting data mentioned in the text. This is going to be a good read for anyone, as I have said it may appeal to anyone to takes an especial interest in life hacking or thinking props but anyone I think could find it interesting and probably educational too. These sorts of books dont always appear on reading or study syllabus but I would have found it very useful to have read one or two like it while I was a student.4.0 out of 5 stars BrainhackBy S Riaz HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 13 April 2016“Brainhack” is a slim book which claims to be full of ‘tips and tricks to unleash your brain’s full potential.’ It is split into Thinking Smarter, Getting Started, Problem Solving, Idea Generation and Breaking Through and Innovating. The book suggests is offers way to investigate the way we do certain activities unconsciously and become more productive and creative – with practical tips that you can really benefit from.As well as covering ways your brain can work better for you, this also has tips on how to use your time more productively. I don’t often read these kind of self-help books, but I found this was full of useful information – including a section on PowerPoint presentations which I found interesting as they explained why they are so often boring! This has a lot of day to day relevance and exhorts you to stop complaining and do something about the things that bother you, which is useful advice to anyone.4.0 out of 5 stars THINK YOU’RE CREATIVE? THINK YOU’RE NOT CREATIVE? THINK AGAIN.By Amazon Customer on 13 April 2016I’m a writer and, I’m ashamed to say, it took me two months to read Neil Pavitt’s latest book. Largely, in my defence, because I was busy writing at the time. That’s what this ‘manual’ is all about though – how to free up your thinking, tap into your creativity and do more with your life than stick all your money in The Caymans so your kids can go to a nice school.OK, I lied about the last bit. That’s out of the box thinking for you.I found Mr Pavitt’s book both surprising and reaffirming. There’s certain stuff in there that I knew, and have used, all my creative life. But there are also lots of fantastic nuggets, backed up with meticulous research data, that made me think again about the way that I think. Some of the simple ideas, like (SPOILER alert) keeping a ‘done’ rather than a ‘to do’ list, were both smart and motivational.Neil has obviously done his homework and it shows. There are lots of facts and figures and statistics in here (sadly mostly from North America) that I found enlightening and weirdly entertaining.99.5% of creative people have probably already decided they don’t need yet another manual to help them do what they do, but I’d say – think again. And if you’re one of those business people who believes that you’re not creative, or that creativity isn’t important in the grand scheme of things, I’d recommend that you read this book.It might just make you realise how much you need writers like me. And, of course, Neil Pavitt.
