His system of internal alchemy, a unique adaptation of two Daoist alchemical classics—the 13th-century Lingbao bifa (Conclusive Methods of Numinous Treasure) and the 17th-century Taiyi jinhua zongzhi (Secret of the Golden Flower)—outlines the concoction of the golden elixir through the dual cultivation of inner nature and life-destiny. After a general survey of the history and methodology, the book follows the classics and presents all different kinds of techniques—walking, pacing, sleeping, circulating the five phases, absorbing tree energy, and capturing planetary essences—in a systematic format and with a great amount of instructional detail. It contains a wealth of information invaluable to anyone interested in genuine Daoist cultivation and elucidates all sorts of obscure concepts to contextualize each practice.    AuthorWang Liping (b. 1949) is the most prominent teacher of Daoist internal alchemy in China today. As outlined in his spiritual biography Opening the Dragon Gate, translated by Thomas Cleary (1997), he grew up the far northeast and was trained three Daoist masters, including a martial artist, a senior physician, and a top-level acupuncturist. After the Cultural Revolution, when they went into hiding, he returned to ordinary life and began teaching in 1985, opening Daoist esoteric practices to the general populace and soon reaching large numbers of people. Returning to concealment after the Falungong crack-down in 1999, he reemerged in 2007 and has gained both national and international acclaim ever.TranslatorMark Bartosh (b. 1975) began his training as a teenager under the guidance of Master Lim and Master Buddhayano, representative of the Thai Forest traditions. After sixteen years training under Samuel Sagan, founder of the Clairvision Meditation School, he has been working with Master Wang since 2011.EditorLivia Kohn, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Religion and East Asian Studies at Boston University. The author or editor of over 40 books, she spent over ten years in Kyoto doing research. She now lives in Florida, serves as the executive editor of Three Pines Press, runs international conferences, and guides study tours to Japan.EndorsementsThis book is a valuable addition to the small but growing body of works in English of one of China’s greatest but least-understood meditation techniques: neidan or internal alchemy. Here, for the first time in English, are the complete meditation techniques of Wang Liping, widely regarded inside China and out as one of the most important neidan teachers of the past forty years. It’s a pleasure to read and a great reference tool. —Ian Johnson, author of The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After MaoThis new book documents Master Wang Liping’s esoteric practice instructions and discourses, presenting methods not only from Daoist alchemical classics, but also those Master Wang developed in his personal training: power walking, star stepping, sleep training, circulating five phases, and more. The presentation is highly systematic and includes a great deal of instructional detail. The wealth of information is invaluable. The work is a must for anyone interested in learning genuine Daoist alchemy and furthering their personal inner cultivation practice.—Jerry Alan Johnson, Ph.D., D.T.C.M., Senior Abbot, Tian Yun Gong Daoist Temple
