Some argue that wrestling is the oldest martial art in the world, and we’d be hard pressed to argue against that point. And as it turns out, we BJJ students can actually benefit a bit from what the best wrestlers have learned about the grappling game over the years.Many top level practitioners have always crossed trained in wrestling and this really gives them an edge. For example, if you can wrestle and have some wrestling techniques built into your BJJ game, you can control where the match goes. So if you have a great top game, you can take down your opponent and work that top game. You can also use wrestling in “reverse” to keep yourself from being taken down as well. This is of particular importance if you compete as we all know that points can sometimes be hard to come by so you don’t want to give away too many during a match.
