Frank Farrelly – Provocative therapy – Russia 1996description:===================================================this is probably Frank’s most recent workshop in russia(2008) title is self explanatory its a workshop for provacative therapy(which as many already know, it is similar to c&f), the way its done is similar to this i.e he speaks and a woman next to him translate it, anyway.. his talkings r perfectly understanable.===================================================What is provocative therapy?Provocative Therapy is a system of psychotherapy in which the therapist plays the devil’s advocate, siding with the negative half of the client’s ambivalence toward his life’s goals, his relationships, work and the structures within which he lives. The therapist also plays the Satanic role by facetiously agreeing with the doom and gloom feelings and expectations of the client, and “tempting” him to continue his “sinning,” his self-defeating attitudes and behavioral patterns. The purpose of this therapy is to change the client. One of the therapist’s main tools to implement this change is warm-hearted humor in its varied forms — exaggeration, irony, self-deprecation, Daliesque absurdities, etc. With a twinkle in his eye, a smile playing about his lips, and genially employing the style of affectionate banter between friends, the therapist uses humor both to sensitize and desensitize the client to problematic cognitive, affective, and behavioral patterns. This is the key to Provocative Therapy — humor. Jocular, whimsical, caring, supportive humor.Who is Frank Farrelly?Frank Farrelly has gained international recognition as a profoundly gifted therapist. He is the author of several publications including Provocative Therapy (with Jeff Brandsma). He has presented numerous workshops, seminars, and demonstrations of his work for professional audiences throughout the United States, Europe and Australasia. His expertise in working with severely disturbed clients makes him an especially interesting and important teacher.Provocative Therapy was developed in an inpatient ward as Farrelly, dissatisfied with his effectiveness as a therapist, began to explore new procedures for promoting significant, resilient change in chronic and recalcitrant patients. He worked in this institutional setting for 17 years, continuing to develop and refine his techniques.Frank holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from Catholic University and is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. For many years he was a clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Social Work and an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. This brilliant therapist was described by one of his clients as “The kindest, most understanding man I have ever met in my whole life, wrapped up in the biggest son of a bitch I have ever met.” Provocative Therapy v being an aggressive arsefrom http://provocativetherapy.blogspot.com:One of the biggest misreadings of Provocative Therapy by people whohave not studied with Frank Farrelly is the belief that “to beprovocative” means to be aggressive with the client! In Provovative Therapy and Provocative Change Works ™ thepractitioner or therapist ensures that they treat the clientinteraction as if talking to an old friend with a twinkle in the eye(and to quote Frank) working from the heart chakra…I noticed in recent times a number of NLPers deciding that havingread the original Provocative Therapy book of having attended aProvocative Therapy weekend training, concluded that they werenow “Provocative Therapists!” I also have come across a number oflongstanding NLP trainers and Master Trainers and even an AssociateProfessor (LOL!) all totally misreading Frank’s work, believing itwas about being rude and obnoxious. None of these individuals had of course ever trained with Frank.Others View:”First a method is shown, which allows therapists to develop from any statement of a client systematically provocative interventions, which will fit exactly to the individual situation of the client. Then the application of the method is demonstrated in many examples of therapeutic work with families, parents and children.”Frank Wartenweiler”Frank Farrelly. . .is a really exquisite example of requisite variety.” — Richard Bandler and John Grinder, Frogs Into Princes.”Frank Farrelly. . .must be thought of with respect (perhaps even delight?) by his clients who have so far played the game of therapy with their therapists, but, I am afraid, also a shocking example for those therapists who, in Laing’s words, ‘are playing at not playing a game’.” — Paul Watzlawick, Ph.D., Mental Research Institute, Palo Alto, CA .lasts: over 13hweb:http://www.provocativetherapy.comenjoy
