It seems that the participant’s psychic ability is not as strong as it could be on this occasion as they are not able to divine the orientation of the coin. “Never mind, after all it was just a 50/50 chance. It doesn’t really mean anything and doesn’t hold much credibility to be able to ascertain whether a coin lands heads or tails. But then again, when you think about it, all of life’s greatest decisions are basically a 50/50 choice; life and death is just a 50/50 chance, so is having either a boy or a girl, you can either pass or fail a test, accept or refuse a job offer. I’d now like to demonstrate this again, however this time using something more personal to you.” The mentalists requests the name of the participant’s current partner. Let’s assume they are called Zoie. The mentalist removes two business cards, on one he writes the name Zoie, on the other he leaves blank. “This card with your partners name on it now signifies the love of your life. You will either destroy nothing at all (Show the blank card), or you will destroy the one person whom you hold so dear to you in your heart (Show the card with their partners name on). In other words, you better get this right!” The two cards are mixed face down so that the participant does not know which is which. These are then placed in front of them again face down. “To start things off, please point to any card.” The card they point to is picked up by the performer. “Just like with any relationship, sometimes your heart can be torn in half (Tear the card up as you say this). It feels like it has been ripped into tiny pieces (Tear the pieces again in half). Scattered into the world like leaves in the wind (Throw the torn up pieces over your holder as you say this). Right now I bet you are wondering whether we have destroyed the blank card or the love of your life yes?” The participant confirms this. “Before I reveal if you have destroyed nothing at all or the love of your life, would you agree that you had the freedom to choose either card, and that all your choices up to this point led you to the destruction of the card now in tatters?” Again the participant confirms this. “But you would be wrong, you have only been given the illusion of choice. You see throughout your life you can choose just about anything you want, you can choose to fight for survival, you can choose to have a baby, you can choose to change career, you can choose to revise for that exam, you can choose to get out of bed in the morning, however there is one thing in life that you cannot choose. It is something so important and life defining yet you have no control over it.
