Its aims arc: to present theory and practice within a specific theoretical orientation or approach at an advanced, postgraduate level: to advance theory by presenting and evaluating new ideas and their relation to the approach: to locate the orientation and its applications within cultural contests, both historically in terns of the origins of the approach. and contemporarily in tense of current debates about philosophy. theory, society and therapy: and, finally, to present and develop a critical view of theory and practice, especially in the context of debates about power. organization and the increasing profcssionaliization of therapy,I am delighted to introduce this volume and its author. Lisa Wake, who is well known and well respected in psychotherapy circles in the UK as formerly representing the Ncurolinguistic Psychotherapy and Counselling .A%ociation as its Chair, in which cnlxicity she also served on the UKCP NHS Committee send, later, the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy as its Vice Chair and then Chair. In this book she also reveals herself to be a leading exponent of and writer on neurolinguistic psychotherapy. While there are numerous hooks on neurolinguistic programming (NLP). this is the first hook to consider NLP as a psychotherapeutic modality. It moves beyond the basic application of material studied at traditional NLP practitioner and master practitioner levels and, consistent with the purpose of the series, advances the theory and field of neurolinguistic psychotherapy (NLPt). It traces the history of NLPt and its emergence theoretically. practically and organizationally as a therapeutic modality. NLPt slxtns a number of different therapeutic philosophies and is directly influenced by the work of Milton Erickson. Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls. therapists and theorists to whom the present author returns throughout the book in order to explore the roots of NI.Pt and its relationship with other psychotherapy approaches. This informs a wider purpose of the book: to consider the relationship between NLPt and pychotherapy in general. Wake explores the principles of constructivism as a philosophical base to NI.Pt and its therapeutic approach. tracing these as far back as Socrates. Later, in three separate chapters, she deconstructs the components of NLP. namely neurology. linguistics and programming. Other highlights include a model of the mind for NLPt which incorporates an alignment between the conscious and unconscious: the integration of current thinking on neuroscience to the practice of NLPt and. specifically, the importance of rapport: an ecological discussion of the role of the therapist within an ethical framework: and a cone! titling chapter on the author’s views on the future of NLPt within a postmodern paradigm. While this book is highly theoretical, it is also highly practical. The author presents her practice. including some extended case studies, as well as a wide range of theory in a strai€htforward, accessible and lively manner. Psychotherapists across all theoretical orientations will find this an invaluable contribution to their thinking and practice.Keith Tudor
