This really helps demonstrate how the various submissions fit together – and how fluid a player must be to counter them. This is information that both the player on top and the one on bottom need to understand to be effective.When a player rolls to escape from the mount they end up in the back mount position and this is where Rorion goes next. He presents a base method for escaping and then builds on it with a number of variations and counters to counters that ultimately get a player out of the inferior position.The second tape in the set, Foot Locks: Offense and Defense, presents submissions from various positions. Rorion spends most of his time on an “Achilles” lock. This is the only foot lock allowed in many sport competitions these days.The first part of the final tape in the set, Finishing Moves from Standing Up and Combat Strategies is largely presented by Royce Gracie.The stand up techniques themselves focus on takedowns, many of which lead cleverly into submissions. The mechanics involve something akin to pulling to guard, but with a twist that leads into an arm lock or triangle choke. These are not what you might call, for lack of a better term, “Judo” type throws. They have a distinctly Jiu-Jitsu style to them.The final portion of this third tape has both Rorion and Royce giving the commentary. They do an improvised walk-through of a sparring session, taking time to explain their thoughts at each step along the way and giving some insight into how they think their way through a match.
