I found the home study version as a win win for both of us. He did not have to admit he was “in debt” publicly and I finally had a husband on board with me. I knew once he watched the classes he would kick in gear with me. We are just starting the process together and he is now “gazelle intense with me.” We should be able to start babystep 3 by next year. For the first time in our life we are in control. Our marriage is better than ever and we actually get to enjoy life. My daughter has to have surgery and we have a plan in place that does not involve credit cards. I own a public relations consulting business and have a good income. But through unorganized living — essentially not paying attention to income and outgo on my finances — I found myself $49,000 in debt.It still stings to see that number in black and white.After my divorce three years ago, I tried to soothe the pain for my girls and for myself by “entertaining” us with “things.” It was all hollow, of course.I knew debt was piling up…IRS because I wasn’t keeping up with my quarterly payments as I should….credit cards because I “needed” new clothes and so did my girls…..a car loan because my paid for SUV “needed” to be upgraded.When I finally sat down and put all of my debts in a spreadsheet, lowest to highest, it quite literally took my breath away. I cried. I prayed. I threw an Oscar-worthy, Southern hissy fit. Then I prayed some more, took a deep breath and ordered FPU Home Edition.It’s only been two months, so I’m a newbie.However, my latest spreadsheet shows my debt total at 46,000….$3,000 knocked off. My wife and I fell off the wagon on the budgetting and we do not have the time to attend classes together in a group setting, so we purchased the DVD set which is so much nicer, and it comes with the cd’s which I listen to in my car while driving to and from my jobs. We get to watch the DVD’s together as time permits at home and as many times as we like. I have found that listening and watching over and over has helped me change my habits and way of thinking. I still have debt but am working on it and making progress. If we had questions we could use the online member resource center to find the answers. While we did not have credit card debt or debt collectors knocking on our door Dave had valuable lessons for us. We went ahead and paid off our car (we now know the secret to getting a free car and have implemented that plan). We set up a ‘true” cash flow plan and budget that works for us. Before we just guessed and still managed to have money left over each month. This way we were able to target increasing savings for retirement and went shopping for Long Term Care Insurance–something important to both of us. Dave was literally the kick in the pants we needed to put together a plan and then act on that plan. With having our cash flow plan with the right priorities in place we have financial peace now and for the future. We will be giving this as gifts to our family members because we highly recommend Financial Peace University.12 of 12 found this review helpful.
