Description

About the AuthorEric Butterworth (1916-2003), often referred to as a “Twentieth Century Emerson,” is considered a legend and spiritual icon in the Unity Movement. A visionary and an innovator, he originated the Spiritual Therapy Workshops. The author of sixteen bestselling books on metaphysical spirituality, a gifted theologian, philosopher, and lecturer, Butterworth was a highly respected New Age pioneer and innovator of New Thought, whose life was dedicated to helping people to help themselves.”It could hardly be clearer: in prayer, go within to the “still point” of your oneness with God, and in a time of silence, listen, for the universe is calling. In the secret awareness that the whole universe is present where you are, project the life and energy and substance as you pray from this consciousness… and the universe will rush and pour and stream into you in fulfillment of your dreams.” The popular Unity minister who authored the acclaimed Discover the Power Within You offers a non-theological, non-ritualistic guide to prayer for contemporary seekers of oneness, guidance, and self-regulation.reviewsThis is one path you should walk on your spiritual journey. I have read this book at least a dozen times only to find new ideas every read. I continue to buy it and give it as a gift It is radical in its idea, but exactly the voice what I was searching for. This is my handbook for prayer and meditation. It takes these sometimes unweildy practices and combines them into one method that brings the individual into a dynamic relationship with the Infinite. For most people, prayer is a reaching out to God. Butterworth reminds us of our innate divinity and reverses the prayer process, telling us that we need to go in rather than out. Go within and, in the silence, touch our true selves, then let the prayer come from our oneness with God. In this way, the prayer is not an intercession or a plea, it is an affirmation of truth. I have been doing this for many years and find it a wonderful way to experience God and receive guidance from Him. One of the techniques Butterworth explains is to Relax, Let Go, and Let God be God in us. The relaxing part is often the missing link for many. I think of it as giving ourselves over in trust to Him. Butterworth also speaks of the power of group prayer, something I’m part of and always find an amazing experience. His “Praying for Others” chapter was also a heart opener, where we are asked to remove our worry from the situation before turning to the divine for an answer. Not easy, but if we truly trust in Him we can establish ourselves in that love that will envelop whoever we are concerned about and establish them in the healing flow. The wonderful thing about this process is that it can work within any religious context, and is what, I believe, Jesus was trying to teach all along. On a personal note, I have been on several Unity retreats with Eric and Olga Butterworth and loved both their teaching and their loving presence. Continuing the journey, I present my own related spiritual teaching in a work of fiction, Dreality: A story about returning home, which tells of the journey from brokeness to wholeness and what life is all about from the viewpoint of those who have died and are now in heaven. There is no greater force on the planet than love, and the sooner each one of us makes knowing that love the most important thing in our lives, the sooner we can make our planet a true reflection of heaven.
