Williams’ The Miracle of Abduction takes a novel look at how we think and what we think, and proposes a “different system of logic” to enable the social scientist to become a theoretician, practitioner and creative artist simultaneously.This book has far-reaching implications for the social scientist, the public policy maker, and, indeed, for anyone involved in decision making.The method of inquiry Williams proposes is applied epistemology, a way of breaking out of the limitations of the scientific method and moving toward a more theoretical and practical method. Language is an essential element in his examination, and symbolic vocabulary a key to the prevailing view of ourselves, our motivations, our goals, our relationships, and so on. The need to examine the appropriateness of our language cannot be overestimated, since, as Williams explains, “Every word we utter, every theory we create, every language we fashion is a statement about the human condition; and how we approach the developing of ideas, directions and formulations for our action is, to some extent, based on our assumptions about ourselves and our universe. Therefore, it is necessary to be exposed to applied up-to-date epistemology.” (p. 16)He proceeds to demonstrate that thought is not something separate from the language we use, and that the ability to provide appropriate symbols and language is a prerequisite for making good judgments and effective decisions. The method he recommends for achieving this is the process.of abduction, a process that can transform our way of thinking.Abduction is a symbolic process to determine whether the categories present in a disiipline or professional field areaccurate and adequate. This order is necessary to improve that discipline or field’s decision-making capacity. It provides for innovation and change.Williams describes abduction as the application of the science of epistemology to self-guidance and management. He suggests that innovation and better constructs can be implemented by combining general semantics epistemology and epistemics-the link to all creative thinking-to formulate a method of inquiry for abduction. This method employs the five stages of the epistemological profile: stage 1-sensing, or reaction; stage 2—-classifying, or action; stage 3-relating, or interaction; stage 4-postulating, or transaction; and stage 5-participating, or synchronicity.Creative problem-solving and with it innovation follow as we learn to question our assumptions with other assumptions and to transcend the “deterministic, prediction-and-control, reductionistic, technology-focused science.” It is through this questioning that we obtain our ideas, thoughts and patterns of behavior.https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Abduction-Applied-Epistemolog…
