Description

Sogyal Rinpoche in Bhutan, March 2007 – Teachings. This segment is just barely under 24 minutes, a talk on mind-training. Rinpoche quotes the Buddha in Tibetan: “Commit not a single unwholesome action. Cultivate a wealth of virtue. To tame this mind of ours. This is the teaching of the Buddha.”. We have to try to abandon negative actions which are the cause suffering to ourselves and others. Instead, we have to adopt the positive, which is the cause of happiness for ourselves and the world. The Dalai Lama says: “Don’t be foolishly selfish but wisely selfish”. We are all interdependent, interconnected: by harming others we harm ourselves; by helping others we help ourselves. Understanding interdependence opens our heart and inspires altruism. If you cannot help at least don’t harm. When you die what counts is how you lived in terms of benefiting others and the state of your mind at the moment of death.“To tame this mind of ours” Buddhism is not about ritual, mantra and ceremonies; is about transforming the mind and the heart. When you conquer your mind you conquer your perception and your experience and the circumstances change.
