If we continually struggle with the negative aspect of situations, we attract unhappiness and happiness will never get a chance. If we put the blame on external obstacles and circumstances alone, then pain, suffering, negative karma, and aggression will spread without end. Instead, it is essential to realize that whether we experience events and circumstances in our life as pleasant or unpleasant depends entirely upon how our mind perceives them.Overcoming Obstacles and Purifying Negative Emotions:Obstacles can either come in dramatic ways, or they can gather over months and years, especially if we do not purify them. For example in relationships, over time we build concepts of each other which can result in impenetrable barriers. We can get stuck in habitual patterns and wrong views of one another, just as we form wrong views of the teacher and the teachings. That is how we create karma—through false impressions and strong reactions. When we fall into negativity and confusion, it is important to see how we got there and to take responsibility for it rather than blaming circumstances or others. When we analyze our concepts one by one and take them apart, they lose their power.Transforming Suffering:Here, Rinpoche uses Dodrupchen Jigmé Tenpé Nyima’s classic text ‘Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment’.Sometimes when you go through difficulties, you need help. At such moments, simply remembering the view can pacify your turbulent emotions. When you cannot instantly enter into the view, remembering your master or the Buddha can open your heart and transform your mind in a matter of seconds.Transforming the Mind Through Devotion:Rinpoche shows how devotion can be such an important dimension of our lives—the key to transcending ordinary mind.The Richness Inside:How do we overcome depression? We don’t know how to take that inspiration and realization with us into our everyday lives. We may follow the teachings and understand on an intellectual level, but we don’t really integrate them into our being. Instead, we compromise and let ego have its way. When ego is in control, your life becomes a mess, because ‘you’ are not you. Our real self, our true nature, is buddha-nature.
