Lisa Feldman Barrett – How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the BrainQuote:When you feel anxious, angry, happy, or surprised, what’s really going on inside you? Most scientists would agree that emotions come from specific parts of the brain, and that we feel them whenever they’re triggered by the world around us. The thrill of seeing an old friend, the sadness of a tear-jerker movie, the fear of losing someone you love – each of these sensations arises automatically and uncontrollably within us, finding expression on our faces and in our behaviour, and carrying us away with the experience. This understanding of emotion has been around since Aristotle. But what if it’s wrong? In How Your Emotions Are Made, pioneering psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett draws on the latest scientific evidence to reveal that our ideas about emotion are dramatically, even dangerously, out of date – and that we have been paying the price. Emotions don’t exist objectively in nature, Barrett explains, and they aren’t pre-programmed in our brains and bodies; rather, they are psychological experiences that each of us constructs based on our unique personal history, physiology and environment. This new view of emotions has serious implications: when judges issue lesser sentences for crimes of passion, when police officers fire at threatening suspects, or when doctors choose between one diagnosis and another, they’re all, in some way, relying on the ancient assumption that emotions are hardwired into our brains and bodies. Revising that conception of emotion isn’t just good science, Barrett shows; it’s vital to our wellbeing and the health of society itself.Open for everyoneNumber of pages: 448Year of publication: 2017Url: https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Emotions-Are-Made-Secret/dp/150…Amazon rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars (31 reviews)Amazon 5 star review wrote:Just when you think you that you know many things about emotions, this book turns your world upside down with a ratonal evidence based approach that is easy to be read. Definetely recommend it!Amazon 5 star review wrote wrote:Fabulous book. I even tweeted about it I was so pleased. It explains how we interpret our bodily signals and this can make us happy or sad. People who panic for example, mistake the signals the body sends to the brain as signs of danger, and this triggers high anxiety. This book puts it all back into perspective. A great mix too of everyday language and scientific references.Amazon 5 star review wrote wrote:Can I get six stars for this book, please? It is simply fantastic. Scientific information that suggests Charles Darwin’s theory is incorrect on emotions. Sorry to say this, But I think the author is right. I am a great fan of Joseph Ledoux ( neuroscience professor), and he is saying similarly that anxiety ( emotion) is within the language and social learning. The author is saying that emotion is culturally specific, not universal ( as Darwin did). This indicates another paradigm shift in who we are.May you find peace, true LOVE and prosperity,Aeon
