Amazon review:Fun read with Substance!By Amazon Customer on January 9, 2016I frequently read self-help books but am often disappointed to find that the content is almost identical to every other self-help book on the market. Honestly if you read self-help books how often have you heard the story of the Harvard/Yale study about writing down your goals which incidentally may not have even happened or the marshmallow test with children? Before even getting into the material on improving myself I was really entertained by the author’s life story and how the message was delivered. It didn’t strike me as filler to get the page count up and transitioned nicely into the helpful material. The stories were able to draw me in and the explanations really resonated with me. The author uses programming terms to describe how the human mind works and how to use that to make positive changes. I happen to have a background in computers and programming so that approach really worked well for me.There are many tools provided to help gain a better understanding of what is causing the problems in your life which the author describes as loops. Loops are a programming term for repeating commands over and over. These negative loops which are unproductive mind patterns that our brain does habitually need to be debugged. Debugging is the process of finding and fixing the parts of a computer program that are delivering undesired results. One such debugging tool is called “Five Whys.” The “five whys” process involves asking the question why until you get to the root of the issue. It might take slightly more or less than 5 iterations but it provides a nice framework for gaining a better understanding of your problem areas. It is really quite amazing how illuminating this simple process can be.While the author puts his own unique spin on the material which I find helpful and entertaining, it seems to have a strong basis in other proven self-help strategies. Mindfulness is included but not as the whole solution like it is in many other books. It seems some of the other tools are similar to cognitive behavioral therapy and affirmations. These various tools are brought together nicely in a synergistic fashion that even includes a 21-day guide to make it easier to integrate these tools into your life.I’m a grumpy, stubborn person but this book hacked my mind anywayBy Jim Hodgson on January 18, 2016Changing habits has got to be the hardest thing a person can do. Habits are so easy to form, I don’t even notice I’m forming them until they’re creating a real problem for me.This book helped me see how to form habits that not only aren’t holding me back, but are good! That might sound simple, but for me it isn’t at all. I’m a grumpy, stubborn person, but I have to admit that once I got into the swing of making better personal choices it kind of started to be a hobby in and of itself. It’s funny how I know something to be true, but I don’t want to act on it until someone says it to me in the right way, and that’s exactly what I got out of this book.insightful and entertaining!By B. Carmichael on January 14, 2016Mind Hacking combines several positive elements that make it a compelling read regardless of the path that brings you to the book. Namely, it is entertaining, provides insight without sacrificing accessibility, and perhaps most important to me in any “self help” book, it is actionable. John offers a wide range of interesting and measurable activities and exercises to try. I think it is this experimental, incremental approach that will help readers (including me) to achieve sustainable progress in their mind hacking.EXCELLENT and UNIQUE READBy Septembre on January 12, 2016I’ve just starting reading Mid Hacking by John Hargrave and I must say it is EXCELLENT! It’s an unusual self-help book! It’s educational, witty, unique, and self-help(full) – if I might add. John writes about his personal life and struggles in a way that exudes self-acceptance and maximal truth. In a step-by-step manner he’s teaching us about how we are capable and FREE to hack into our own minds and ultimately change our lives. It’s not a bunch of expected jargon, but rather an easy-to-read guide to change your life — starting today.Upon receiving the book, I expected it to resemble some of the other books I’ve read, but I’ve got to tell – it’s DIFFERENT FOLKS. Definitely encourages you to change your mind, and change your life. Don’t wait to order, because life isn’t waiting! Get your mind hacking on now! I’m sure my life and your life will never be the same!Focuses a lot on habit building which is another reason I like this bookBy Brian Morris, M.D. on January 31, 2016Very helpful book on getting our mind on our side. Focuses a lot on habit building which is another reason I like this book. Good stuff.Brian Morris, M.D.Author of The Wellness Code: The Evidence-Based Prescription for Weight Loss, Longevity, Health and HappinessClever, entertaining and most of all: live changingBy Philipp Keller on January 16, 2016Format: Kindle EditionI read this book because I had problems to concentrate. When reading and when listening to people my mind was constantly wandering. This book (with the accompanying youtube videos) helped my mind to be attentive. There’s much more in the book but that’s what was most helpful to me. I already recommended to three people. The book itself is well written: It’s a mixture between personal story (Hardgrave is telling how he overcame alcohol addiction), stories from well known people (e.g. Jim Carrey) and researches. Hardgrave put a lot of effort into the book and it shows. Highly recommendable, especially for programmers.
