Learn to recognise or write in handwritten not just print forms.** Traditional and alternate forms, as well as simplified Chinese form and Mandarin pronunciation in pinyin! Excellent for cross-referencing.** The listed vocab for each kanji include not only those with the character in the first position in the word, but vocab with the character occurring in the middle or end of the word as well. Superb to get an overall sense of each kanji usage.And you won’t get any of that in your Nelson!In addition to the above, my opinion is that the Appendixes alone are worth it for both learning and out of pure interest: with a full guide to writing kanji, guide to country and place names, core meanings by frequency of use and kanji in groups of synonym meanings and others. The latter two are gold for kanji learners, rather than having to pile through the often arbitrary JLPT or Joyo grade lists (which are additionally present) – learn what is most useful first or all those kanji in the areas that interest you most.
