Description

Dr.Alice Roberts – Dont Die Young Seasons 1 & 2 Dr Alice Roberts takes viewers on a tour of the human body, introducing key organs, and explaining their functions and idiosyncrasies. She also learns about the latest research aimed at keeping the body healthy and reveals just how damaged organs can become if they aren’t looked after. Dr Alice believes that by educating people in the way their bodies work, they will be persuaded to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Whether they do or not, the programme remains a fascinating insight into a machine that far too many take for granted        Season 01Episode One ~ Kidneys If people knew more about how their bodies worked, they might be in with a better chance of staying healthy. Dr Alice Roberts, a senior teaching fellow at the Department of Anatomy at Bristol University and presenter on BBC Two’s Coast, is on a mission to help people understand the machinations of their major organs and, in doing so, avoid a lifestyle which could be leading them to an early grave.Episode Two ~ LungsDr Alice Roberts deploys some shock tactics to make one confirmed smoker realise just how much she’s damaging her lungs. Thirty-four-year-old Lisa Garrity’s will power always lets her down and on a night in the pub, she can easily binge smoke her way through 40 cigarettes. Lisa’s chosen sport is trapeze, but she gets out of breath pretty quickly and knows that quitting the cigarettes will make her a better performer.Episode Three ~ HeartAs a hard-working organ, making sure that every muscle, tissue and cell in the body gets just what it needs, the heart is in need of some love. Thirty-six-year-old Stephen Hall is putting his heart under plenty of stress. As a self-confessed workaholic running his own busy gastro pub, he is finding life pretty hectic. When he wants to wind down, he does all the wrong things – binge drinks, binge smokes and binge eats. He’s putting strain on his heart, and even when he tries his best to exercise by playing football, he becomes so stressed out on the pitch that he often gets sent off. Alice puts Stephen’s heart and stress levels through a series of tests and, when he gets the results, he knows he has to make some drastic changes to his lifestyle.Episode Four ~ EyesDr Alice Roberts undergoes a thorough eye examination in the latest programme in her tour of the body’s major organs. As this hands-on, lecture-free guide to keeping your organs in good working order continues, Alice puts her own body to the test, beginning with a nail-biting 250ft climb up a sheer cliff face – blindfolded. She meets Sarah Crump, who has a family history of eye problems, and sets out to discover whether Sarah’s computer- and TV-dependent lifestyle is affecting her sight.Episode Five ~ SkinThe body’s largest organ — the skin — comes under close scrutiny in this penultimate episode. Alice puts her own outer layer through a series of tests, weathering temperature extremes and running her face through a computer programme – which ages her until she looks like an 80-year-old. Alice asks whether the thousands of wrinkle creams on the high street are any good, or a complete waste of money. She also meets Ed Akerman, a 22-year-old farmer who exposes his skin to the hazards of the elements and his physical farming job on a daily basis. Alice puts his skin under the microscope to find out just how much damage he’s doing without the right protection.Episode Six ~ BrainDr Alice Roberts delves deep into the body’s most complex organ – the brain – and discovers how the brain can be tricked into seeing illusions which don’t exist, and how it can be trained to improve its memory function. Rugby fanatic and primary school teacher Sean Gilbertson has trouble remembering the names of the 27 pupils in his class; he thinks it is down to the 40 separate concussions he has received playing his beloved sport. He has now been told to quit rugby – or risk damaging his brain permanently. ~~      Season 2 Episode 1: Male Reproductive OrgansDr Alice Roberts returns with a new series of the medical show that shows how to look after the body’s vital organs. She witnesses the birth of a baby girl and examines new scientific research which suggests that women advertise their most fertile times to men without even realising it themselves.Episode 3: The LiverLiver disease is in danger of becoming a ticking time bomb in the UK – with one in ten of us likely to experience a problem with our liver at some point in our lives. Dr Alice Roberts explains what the liver does and why its ability to suffer in silence until it is often too late is both its strength and its biggest weakness. There’s advice on how best to monitor your alcohol consumption, information about other ways you can damage your liver and a chance to see both a liver transplant taking place and stem cell research aimed at making replacement livers in the future.Episode 4: The Stomach and IntestinesDr Alice Roberts gets to see inside her own stomach by swallowing a tiny camera – one of the latest diagnostic tools in modern medicine. The pictures recorded reveal some surprising – if harmless – results. Using dissection, drawing and some unusual tests involving sweetcorn and a stop watch, we find where the stomach and intestines are, how big they are and how best to look after them. Since bowel cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer, it’s a message we all need to hear.Episode 5: The Ear, Nose and ThroatNearly nine million people in the UK suffer from some form of hearing loss, Dr Alice Roberts gets a short insight into what it is like with specially designed headphones. And she discovers how loud noise can cause irretrievable damage to our ears; how loud is too loud for your MP3 player for instance? Using her skills as an anatomist, Dr Alice also explains some of the roles of the nose and the throat and find out why for some snoring can be a sign of a life threatening condition.Episode 6: The Immune SystemThe Immune system is one of the things that keeps you alive. It’s as vital as the lungs and the heart and the stomach. So what is it? How does it work? What happens when it doesn’t? T-cells, killer T-cells, HIV, antibodies, a great guide to what to expect.Episode 7: Bones, Muscles and JointsPlease note that this episode contains some graphic scenesHalf of all reported pain is due to problems with bones, muscles and joints so Dr Alice Roberts has some much needed advice on how to look after them. We see what a so called ‘slipped disc’ actually looks like, what happens to a joint when it’s damaged by osteoarthritis and discover that our bones, as well as our muscles can change shape if we change the way we use them.                                                                                                                                                                       Episode 8: The Whole BodyDr Alice Roberts explores the benefits of exercise on the human body, updating the progress of some of the contributors from the first series to see if they have stuck to their new healthy lifestyles. She sees how the latest medical technology, such as 3D scanning, will help doctors diagnose illness in the future and takes part in an exercise challenge to examine the effects of old age on our fitness levels.
