Description

Vale-Tudo Takedowns featuring DARRELL GHOLARDarrell shows you quite a few ways to take down an opponent in a no holds barred (i.e. a street fighting) environment where everything goes.Total Runtime: 100 minutesAmazon Link: click *here*DescriptionFor the first time ever, learn the takedown secrets of Darrell Gholar and the Brazilian Top Team! This 2 DVD instructional set covers the very same strategies and takedowns as taught by Darrell Gholar to NHB legends Mario Sperry, Murilo Bustamante, Ricardo Arona, Vitor Belfort and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.Filmed on location at the wrestling room of the Brazilian Top Team, the DVDs cover the important positions like the clinch, takedowns in the middle of the ring and takedowns against the ropes and cage. This is not a wrestling series, but an inside look at how to properly takedown an opponent in a true No Holds Barred match were you are dealing with punches, kicks and other elements that can hinder the grappler from taking down his opponent. Darrel’s section on how to control the opponent without getting hit is amazing and highly valuable for NHB and streetfighting. Learn many of the same moves that the world’s top fighters are using as Darrell references many fights during his teaching to show exactly what takedowns and how they were used.Quote:Amazon Review: 4 out of 5 StarsDarrell Gholar has done a great job condensing the plethora of wrestling takedowns to a handful of tried-and-true moves that he (convincingly) argues are the most effective for vale tudo/mma fights. I would also add that these techniques are the most important ones to drill for anyone new to wrestling and looking to add some great takedowns to their arsenal, whether for grappling competition or self-defense.The first dvd explains the ins-and-outs of the double-leg (including what to do when an opponent sprawls); avoiding and escaping guillotine chokes when you shoot in; the basic single-leg takedown (and how to transition to it from a failed double-leg), which includes detailed explanations of running the pipe and stepping into a high crotch. The second dvd focuses on modifying take-downs against a wall or cage. In it Darrell goes over the tie-up; dropping down for a single-leg and double-leg from within the clinch; battling for underhooks and pummeling; a couple of throws (he doesn’t show trips because he feels they are too risky); and how to maintain control of an opponent against the cage.Throughout both dvds Darrell is ever mindful of knees and punches, and he will explain how to perform the techniques while avoiding or minimizing strikes from your opponent. I gave this set four stars instead of five for two reasons: (1) as detailed as Darrell is in his explanations of how to execute takedowns, he only mentions takedown defense when showing how to overcome it. A more complete instructional would include both offensive AND defensive wrestling (for that I recommend Ultimate Takedowns with Mike Van Arsdale and Kevin Jackson). (2) There are no chapters on these dvds. You have to fast forward if you don’t want to start from the beginning. Fortunately, both dvds are under an hour in length, so it isn’t a terrible inconvenience, but how hard would it have been to include scene selction?Overall, it is a very worthwhile DVD, especially for its price. If you want some solid takedown advice without getting overwhelmed by all the different techniques, I would definitely get this.
