Description

Buried within all of us is what Dr. Clarissa Pinkola EstÉs refers to as “the one who knows”-our instinctive, intuitive nature. This, she teaches, is the source of creativity and understanding that lies out of sight in darkness, often called the unconscious. On Seeing in the Dark, listeners join the esteemed Jungian psychoanalyst and bestselling author to learn how to perceive “through the eyes of soul as well as through the eyes of the ego.” This dual way of seeing, being, and acting, Dr. Estes explains, is the most direct way to reclaim the gifts and the “healing apothecary” set into each soul at birth. Seeing in the Dark includes two CDs of empowering myths and stories-two told here for the first time-that introduce: “The Rebbe in Prison” • “The Man Who Sought Treasure Afar” • “The Buried Bride” • “The Owl and the Treasure” “We are weakly linked or severed from the wild and wise self,” says Dr. EstÉs. “Yet, deep creative life is informed by the realm of mystery, dreams, sudden knowings: the shadow.” Seeing in the Dark is an inspiring call to “mine the raw gems of spirit, soul, and creative life-again, or for the very first time.”Editorial ReviewsAbout the AuthorClarissa Pinkola Estes was born in Indiana in 1943 to parents of Spanish and Mexican ancestry, but was later adopted by Hungarian immigrants. She received her Ph.D. from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was certified as a Jungian analyst in 1984. She worked as a psychoanalyst in private practice and developed and taught the Writing as Liberation of the Spirit program in state and federal prisons. Estes served as executive director of the C.G. Jung Center for Education and Research and cofounded and codirected Colorado Authors for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights. One of Estes’s better-known writings, Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype (1992), is drawn from tales and myths she heard firsthand from members of such cultures as Asian, Mexican, African, and Greek. She also wrote The Gift of Story (1993). Her books can be found indexed under Psychology, Women’s Studies, Mythology, Spiritual Development, and Poetry. From AudioFileEstés recounts a group of original stories, commentaries, and observations centered on the search into the unconscious for understanding and knowledge. She dramatizes her stories, drawing listeners into a world of folktales with a variety of characters who have lessons to learn and share. In an intimate tone, she shares insights into viewing the world not just with the eyes but also with the soul. The presentation is directed at women but may be of broader interest as an accessible introduction to Estés’s work on intuition and instinct. Her voice is a little strained at times, but it doesn’t diminish her easy, conversational tone.
