Amazon  Reviews5.0 out of 5 stars Healthy Eating Made Easy and DeliciousBy Trixie L on February 3, 2013I love to cook and as a dairy-free vegetarian, I often feel that I do a pretty decent job staying healthy. Dr. Mao’s Secrets of Longevity Cookbook, however, proved to be an invaluable resource with tons of advice, vegan-friendly recipes, and detailed information on how to make every meal a bit healthier.Dr. Mao’s begins with an ingredient breakdown and examines healthy eating practices, including offering suggestions for substitutions that are healthier options. There are multiple menu plan suggestions that are really useful and enough vegan-friendly options that this cookbook proved really valuable. The first couple chapters are helpful at establishing sound dietary guidelines on subjects ranging from caffeine to dairy and from gluten to supplements. These are really helpful, but I loved the recipes as they made the suggestions much more tangible. With recipes like Vegan Milk, Dr. Mao’s Hot Herbal Cereal, Eggless Tofu Scramble, and Squash Peanut Soup, there are plenty of vegan recipes. Plus, with options like Vegetarian Hot and Sour Soup, Creamy Sweet Potato Soup, Mango Avocado Salad, Broccoli Stir-Fry with Yam Noodles, and Stuffed Pumpkin, there are satisfying vegetarian options that are packed with nutrients and sure to please even non-vegans. I loved this book and the recipes, although really healthy, are tasty and fairly easy (no crazy steps or hard-to-find ingredients here).5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!By Nholland22 on August 12, 2013Dr. Mao is a 38th generation healer who has researched people and recipes from around the world that help you live healthier and longer. Knowing him personally as a caring, sensitive physician who takes your whole being into consideration, I heartily endorse this book. It has wonderful recipes, and delightful stories of the origins of those recipes. He even has week-long menus for weight loss, boosting immunity, a healthy heart and more.5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Unique and Wonderful Collection of Healthy and Often Gourmet Recipes…By Ralph on August 5, 2014This book which I had to buy for more off ebay because my Amazon order of it rendered the wrong book, is excellent! The recipes are totally unique and very healthy and were collected from many sources, often from doctors, by the author or else were from his wife or some other source. Most recipes do require at least some work (more or less) and often call for ingredients some will consider exotic or hard to find unless ordering them online. At the bottom of each recipe is a wonderful colored rectangular strip giving informationabout the key ingredient in the recipe as to nutritional value and conditions it helps heal or treat. Near the beginning of the book the author gives his top 10 longevity foods although the book contains additional ones in its recipes. Gourmets will love this book. It is sophisticated and fun to try out. Enjoy !5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting!By Amazon Customer on February 24, 2013This book was recommended to me by a friend. I have really benefited from his suggested spice mixtures and his recipes are not only healthy but tasty.3.0 out of 5 stars No Table of Contents!!!By Robert T. Hunter on July 30, 2013Sure, this is a great book, but its almost impossible to navigate a cookbook without a table of contents! I literally have to scroll and scroll to find what I want. Very frustrating.5.0 out of 5 stars EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOKBy The Queen of Bean Station on March 14, 2014I’m not even finished reading this book but I have been enjoying every minute of the reading. There is so much information in this book that is helpful for great health that I highly recommend this book and the companion book of the same name, without the recipes.5.0 out of 5 stars The many benefits of the Chinese way of eating and living.By Claire Bear on January 10, 2015I have been working with a doctor of Chinese medicine for a year. I have made great strides in my health eating according to her instructions. I’ve eliminated gluten, diary, red meat, and spicy foods. My brother is fortunate enough to live in LA and is a patient of Dr. Mao. I am so inspired to take my eating to a higher level using the recipes in Dr. Mao’s cookbook. I will be able to prepare wonderful soups that don’t include any dairy products. There is also great information on how to incorporate Chinese practices into your life and the benefits of them in the beginning of the book.4.0 out of 5 stars Are you open-minded?By Autamme_dot_com on January 7, 2013The “Doctor to the Stars”, as this author is apparently, has brought out a following tome to his “Secrets of Longevity” book that provides a number of recipes that promise to improve health, happiness, and longevity. That is what the marketing blurb says, and no doubt a lawyer has carefully ensured that that promise is not legally binding at the risk of feeling the wrath of a frustrated reader. This book first starts with a recap of the important parts behind Dr. Mao’s philosophy and programme, built on interviews with over 100 centenarians from in China, with a special interest in observing what foods they ate and recipes they shared with their families. In common with so many books of this kind, a lot of the advice appears to be common sense or stuff that we should already be doing, but obviously if we were all doing this and leading perfect lives then there would be no need for such a book. The author has also managed to avoid the problems of hyperbole, over-promising and faux “rah rah, you can do it!” enthusiasm that many diet and life change books are filled with. This feels and acts like a book that, even if you don’t embrace the programme fully, you know you can still digest a lot of good, useful, actionable information that will have positive benefits for you in the future.Nothing is apparently taken for chance. Even your kitchen is placed under the good doctor’s eye, as the book notes “Some containers and utensils may leach toxic substances and change properties of your food — at the very least, downgrading the nutrition and more seriously, actually causing you harm. As in everything else, I recommend adopting an attitude of moderation. Control what you can within your kitchen and be relaxed while eating at a friend’s house or in restaurants.” At first when reading this kind of material this reviewer was a bit sceptical, but with an open mind many small things can fall into place when they are least expected to. Certainly this book appears more confidently factual than faddish. The chapter on “spice for life” considers also making your own spice blends with the aim that certain blends can give additional health benefits, such as increasing energy levels, cleansing the body and the like. No comment is made to the medical efficacy of these claims but certainly if any benefits do accrue and you like the spicing anyway then it is a useful additional benefit. After a quick look at menu planning it is then time to get cooking and straight into the recipes. Some of them seem rather interesting, such as “Hunza Brain Tonic” and “Emotional Tranquility Tea” for starters. Explanations and motivations are given for all of the recipes, which themselves are fairly well-written, understandable and practical if not, at times, a little involved with so many ingredients. It would be fair to say that many of the recipes will be unfamiliar to many, yet the range and diversity of them makes it a great source of attractive, interesting recipes for the more adventurous gastronome to try, even if they are not intending to follow the doctor’s programme in isolation. Sadly not every recipe features its own photograph, as the quality of food photography is high and it would help further draw the reader in by looking at what they might be about to make. The end of the book features a resource guide and further reading/references section as well as a comprehensive index. So what to say in conclusion? The book’s price might make it less of an impulse buy than it should. If you believe you can gel with the doctor’s advice and will invest in a possible change-for-the-good it would be a brilliant investment. Certainly the style and approach taken by the programme makes it stand out. Maybe it is a question of whether you are open-minded, ready for possible change and to try something new?
