Wong Shun Leung started training with Yip Man at 17, after challenging the school. Wong Shun Leung had single-handedly beaten one of the senior students, then went head to head with another. Wong Shun Leung was then challenged by the intrigued Yip Man and found himself completely controlled by him. Already at this age had a reputation as a fighter, and Yip Man was at first worried that he would bring trouble for Wing Chun. In fact, Wong Shun Leung’s prowess as a Beimo fighter helped secure for Wing Chun its formidable reputation. [1] “Beimo” were semi-organised bare-knuckle challenge fights between youths in Hong Kong. Wong Shun Leung, who stood only 5’6″ tall, participated in perhaps over 100 of these challenge fights and was never beaten. Wong Shun Leung earned the name Gong Sau Wong King of Talking Hands. Once asked if he was the best fighter in the world, he replied, “No, only the second best.” When asked who was the best, he said, “I don’t know, I haven’t met him.”Wong Shun Leung stayed with Yip Man many years longer than most of Yip Man’s other famous students. While with Yip Man, Wong Shun Leung helped Yip Man teach, not formally opening his own school until the late 1960s. Wong Shun Leung taught Wing Chun at his kwoon until his untimely death from a stroke.————————————————————————————————His students included, notably, Jeet Kune Do founder and martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Lee later screen-tested Wong for an appearance in the ill-fated Game of Death, and corresponded regularly with Wong Shun Leung on the subject of the science of fighting. In one letter, Lee wrote, “Even though I am (technically) a student of Yip Man, in reality I learned my Kung fu from you.”————————————————————————————————There are quite a number of videos now available on the Wing Chun combat system, some of which run into several volumes and have running times of over two or more hours. This tape, however, while one of, if not the earliest of those available, is far and away the best of the bunch and offers so much more than products running three times as long.Featuring the late Sifu Wong Shun-Leung, teacher and classmate of the legendary Bruce Lee.The tape is basically broken down into the following sections:1) Wing Chun History,2) Basic Concepts (including footwork and “Centreline Theory”),3) ‘Siu Nim Tau’ form and form breakdown/applications,4) ‘Chi Sau’ concepts and applications, and5) a brief discussion of further forms and weapons.While no where near as in-depth as more recent tapes may have tried to be, this particular tape illustrates perfectly the Wing Chun concepts of SIMPLICITY, DIRECTNESS and EFFICIENCY by offering so much to the viewer by way of it’s non-complicated approach. A fine introduction to Wing Chun for the uninitiated, and a valuable reference and tribute to a real life legend in the system for the serious devotee.This video is a definite MUST HAVE for martial arts fans. If there is anything negative to be said about it, it is that, sadly, the sequel tape mentioned at the end of the program, was never produced, …more’s the pity since the death of Sifu Wong in 1997.Enjoy!
